KrisLegal FAQ: Legal AI, Compliance, and Pricing

What is KrisLegal?

KrisLegal is a private AI platform for small and mid-size law firms. It connects to your practice management system, reads your open matters, and produces finished work product in your templates. Every person at the firm gets their own login, configured for their role.

Your firm holds the AI contract directly with Anthropic. No consumer AI accounts. No client data in ChatGPT.

What can it actually produce?

Documents: demand letters, deposition notices, engagement letters, mediation letters, summons, notices of appearance, release agreements, orders of dismissal, initial disclosures, case headers, and more. All pre-filled from your matter data and formatted on your letterhead.

Analysis: upload any filing, letter, or record and the AI extracts parties, courts, dates, and key facts.

Contract review with AI-generated redlines. Collaborative editing with tracked changes and provenance. Dictation with formatted output. Time tracking with CSV export for Clio import. Legal research with verified citations.

What practice areas does it cover?

13 practice area suites: Bankruptcy, Corporate, Criminal Defense, Elder Law, Employment, Entertainment, Estate & Probate, Family Law, Immigration, Intellectual Property, Personal Injury, Real Estate, and Workers' Compensation.

Each suite has specialized extraction, analysis, and drafting tools built for that area of law. New suites ship regularly. Custom suites are typically live within 3-4 weeks.

How does the AI assistant work?

The assistant is a persistent sidebar available on every page. It knows the current case, the logged-in attorney, and the firm's configuration. Ask it to draft a document, analyze a filing, research a legal question, or log time.

It pulls context from Clio, your uploaded documents, and your firm's playbook. It can use over 200 tools across case management, document generation, legal research, and integrations.

Can we use our own document templates?

Yes. Upload any DOCX template and it becomes a workflow available to your whole team. The built-in templates are starting points, not requirements. Custom templates use the same AI field-population pipeline as the built-in ones. Attorney profiles, signatures, and letterhead are applied automatically.

Does every attorney get the same configuration?

No. Each attorney profile carries their bar number, billing rate, active practice areas, and signature block. The assistant loads the right context for whoever is logged in.

Role-based access controls what each person can see and do. Owners and admins manage settings and billing. Attorneys manage cases and generate documents. Staff handle support tasks. Clients see only their own matters.

Can our clients access it?

Yes. You invite clients via magic link to a matter-scoped portal. Clients can view their matters, upload documents, and interact with a simplified AI assistant, all under your firm's control.

Access levels are configurable: read-only or contribute. Every client interaction is logged and auditable. Clients acknowledge AI consent before accessing the portal. Your firm sets the boundaries.

What about email and Microsoft 365?

KrisLegal connects to Microsoft 365 to search and read email, list calendar events, browse OneDrive files, and search contacts. All read-only. All through your firm's own credentials.

For inbound email, every firm gets an auto-generated address. Forward an email and the AI classifies it, files it to the right matter, processes attachments, and can draft a reply.

How does contract review work?

Upload a contract and choose a review profile: protective (risk flagging, 15-25 suggestions), aggressive (expand rights, 25-40 suggestions), or light (critical issues only, 5-8 suggestions).

The AI generates categorized redline suggestions with severity ratings. You can track negotiation rounds, accept or reject individual changes, and export as a redlined DOCX with native tracked changes or a clean version with all changes accepted.

What does legal research actually cover?

The AI assistant uses CourtListener for federal and state court opinions, dockets, and oral arguments going back decades. It searches opinions by keyword, court, and date range, analyzes citations, and formats structured research memos.

For very recent opinions from the last several weeks, Westlaw or Lexis will have more complete coverage. Download from either and upload directly to KrisLegal for analysis. No Westlaw or Lexis subscription is required for anything else.

Does KrisLegal check for conflicts?

Yes. KrisLegal runs conflict detection using fuzzy name matching across your matters. When you add a party to a case, the system checks for matches against existing parties on opposite and same sides.

This is a supplementary check, not a replacement for your firm's formal conflicts process. Run your full conflicts procedure through your existing system.

Does this hold up under Heppner?

Yes. In Heppner, a criminal defendant used Anthropic's free consumer Claude to analyze privileged materials on his own, without attorney direction. The court found no privilege on three grounds: no attorney-client relationship with the AI, no confidentiality under consumer terms that permitted training and third-party disclosure, and no attorney direction.

KrisLegal addresses all three. Your attorneys use it within their practice management workflows. Your firm holds a direct Anthropic commercial API contract that prohibits training and guarantees confidentiality. We provide a DPA for your compliance file. The court itself noted that attorney-directed enterprise AI use under confidentiality obligations presents a materially different analysis under the Kovel framework.

Do we supply our own Anthropic API key?

Yes. Your firm creates an Anthropic commercial account at console.anthropic.com and supplies the API key in platform Settings. All queries travel to Anthropic under your firm's credentials, establishing a direct contractual relationship between your firm and Anthropic for that data flow.

KrisLegal stores your key encrypted at rest and transmits it only to Anthropic's API endpoint.

Does Anthropic train on our data?

No. Anthropic's commercial API terms contractually prohibit using API-submitted data to train AI models. This applies to every query and document your firm submits through KrisLegal. It is one of the core structural differences between the commercial API and the consumer products at issue in Heppner.

Who can see our client data and matter files?

Your documents and case files are stored on KrisLegal's servers, isolated to your organization. No other firm can access them. KrisLegal staff access client files only when you open a specific support request and grant access for that purpose. We do not browse, review, or use your data for any other reason.

Files are retained for the duration of your subscription and deleted within 30 days of termination.

Will this affect our malpractice coverage?

Most professional liability insurers distinguish between consumer AI tools and commercial API deployments where the firm holds the contract. KrisLegal falls in the latter category.

Your firm holds a direct contract with Anthropic, data is not used for training, and we provide a Data Processing Addendum for your due diligence file. If your insurer asks for documentation, send them the DPA and your Anthropic commercial API agreement. We can also provide a summary letter on request.

What about ABA ethics requirements?

KrisLegal's architecture is built around ABA Formal Opinion 512 (2024): commercial API terms, no training on client data, and a Data Processing Addendum establishing confidentiality obligations with the vendor.

Attorneys remain responsible under Model Rule 1.1 for supervising AI-generated work product and verifying accuracy before filing or reliance. State ethics guidance on AI and cloud computing varies; we recommend checking your jurisdiction's formal opinions.

Is this HIPAA compliant?

Most law firms are not HIPAA covered entities, so HIPAA does not apply to most attorney work. If your practice regularly handles protected health information, contact us before uploading PHI. We can discuss a Business Associate Agreement and the appropriate data handling arrangement for your specific situation.

How long does setup take?

Most firms are running within one week of the setup call. Setup covers connecting Clio, configuring your practice areas, adding attorney profiles with bar numbers and billing rates, loading your document templates, connecting Microsoft 365, and supplying your Anthropic API key.

We handle the configuration work. You review and approve before going live.

How is pricing structured?

Flat monthly rate per firm. No per-seat pricing. All practice area suites included. One-time implementation fee based on firm size covers configuration, templates, attorney profiles, training, and 30 days of dedicated support.

No annual contracts. Month-to-month. Your firm pays Anthropic directly for API usage at published rates with no markup. Custom workflows, document types, and integrations available on an hourly or project fee basis. Email us for details.

What does support look like?

Email support at hello@krislegal.com with a target response time of one business day. Issues affecting firm operations are treated as priority. During onboarding and the pilot period, you have direct access to the team.

What if we need a capability that isn't listed?

Describe it and we'll tell you whether it's in development or can be built for your firm. New practice area suites ship regularly. Custom document types, analytical tools, and integrations are part of the onboarding conversation for firms with specific workflow requirements. Most custom suites are live within 3-4 weeks.

What happens to our data if we cancel?

Your data remains accessible for export for 30 days after your subscription ends. All firm data is permanently deleted within 30 days after that window closes.

You can export case data, documents, and contacts at any time through the platform, and you can request written certification of deletion at any point.
